Does anyone have any natural suggestions for how to prevent mosquite bites?

good luck....the best products I've tried have been purchased at my health food store which you spray on..they'll last for a short while and are very aromatic...I've tried making my own using essential oils of citronella along with some others but it didn't really work that well....I've tried carrying around those little buzzing gadgets that mimick the sound of a dragonfly (supposedly) and that didn't work...I've tried eating garlic daily, nope....brewer's yeast, nope.....I think some of us have a slightly higher body temperature and the skeeters are more attracted to us, pick us out in a group of a dozen people...but, I found some interesting info I will share:
"OK, mosquitos . . . prepare to be repelled!!!!!
Use Bounce Fabric Softener Sheets . . . Best thing ever used in Louisiana . . . just wipe on & go. . . Great for Babies

Bob, a fisherman, takes one vitamin B-1 tablet a day April through October . He said it works. He was right. Hasn't had a mosquito bite in 33 years. Try it. Every one he has talked into trying it works on them. Vitimin B-1 (Thiamine Hydrochloride 100 mg.)

If you eat bananas, the mosquitos like you — something about the banana oil as your body processes it. Stop eating bananas for the summer and the mosquitos will be much less interested.

This is going to floor you, but one of the best insect repellents someone found (who is in the woods every day), is Vick's Vaporub.

Plant marigolds around the yard, the flowers give off a smell that bugs do not like, so plant some in that garden also to help ward off bugs without using insecticides.

"Tough guy" Marines who spend a great deal of time "camping out" say that the very best mosquito repellant you can use is Avon Skin-So-Soft bath oil mixed about half and half with alcohol.

One of the best natural insect repellants that I've discovered is made from the clear real vanilla. This is the pure vanilla that is sold in Mexico. It works great for mosquitoes and ticks, don't know about other insects. "

Let me know what you end up trying and if it works for you :)

I tried a combo of the vic vapor rub and some peppermint oil, and it worked wonders.

Also, wore the light colored tightly woven clothes. I made it through the whole weekend with out a single bite.

      Thanks everyone!

i use neem otameal and lavender bar soap.
it keeps most of them away from me.
    and those thing ATTACK me.

i read that is was due to the amount of cholestrol on your skin.
and this just means that you are more effecient at expelling cholesterol than others. the like the smell of it.

Wow! Definately a few tips that are new to me! I'm definately going to try them once open season on me begins--usually around June on my piece of the rock. I get munched on occasionally--sometimes alot and then sometimes not--probably something to do with the foods I eat--

those suckers better look out now!

I am from Minnesota, which is mosquito country. There we use Skin-so-Soft, but I would nix the alcohol since it will dry out your skin. Just SSS works fine. Also, I would put your hair up, since heat attracts them and hair around your neck provides a warm moist environment they like. A hat also helps, especially if you put product in your hair, because the smell of the products you put in your hair attracts them like mad.

    Good luck!

I am thrilled to see someone from Minnesota here. I'm on my way to Ely in May to do a bunch of canoeing and fishing, hiking as well. I'm one that the skeeters just love, and I react like crazy to the bites. I am also thinking of getting a "Origanl Bug Shirt" this will cover my torso, face and head, and arms. Can't stand the smell of SSS...what do you think about the fabric softner idea? Another thought that I've read about is to always wear light colored clothes, no dark greens (the love that color) ... what are your opinions on these ideas?
      thanks!

I think light-colored clothes may be effective only in the sense that they reflect the sun more than dark colors, which absorb the sun and heat. Since mosquitos are attracted to heat sources and darker clothes make you appear as a stronger heat source, lighter clothes would lessen their attraction to you somewhat.

If you don't like the smell of SSS, maybe try to look at the ingredients on the bottle and see what's in it.

Hope this helps and have fun in Ely,

Thank you for your response. I'm sure you are correct about the dark clothes issue.
Was wondering if you know of anyone who has tried or requied a need to wear "bug clothing" That is something like "The Original Bug Shirt" or the clothing made by "Buzz Off?"
My strong alergic reaction to mosquito bites is really something I need to have in check. However I don't want to show up in Ely with my canoe looking like I'm from the jungle. However I will wear this atire if necessary.
          Thanks again for your help..

Another essential oil that works quite well is Nepeta (Catnip).
There has recently been studies published that found it to be the most effective!

I have also had some success burning any incense if eating/entertaining outside. The little buggers don't seem to like the smoke.

Thanks for all the great suggestions everyone!

I would say tighter woven clothing would be sufficient. Go with fibers that breathe well like cotton or linen but very tightly woven so the buggers can't get to your skin so easily. Avoid stuff like polyester obviously as this fabric doesn't breathe at all and will just increase your temperature and attract the mosquitos as a result.

I think the concept behind the Bug Shirt is probably similar to that of SPF clothing. SPF clothing is based on the idea that the more tightly woven the fabric, the more light is keeps out and thus the more protective it is to your skin from the sun.

You might also talk to a doctor about it. I found that I am very allergic to flea bites. Didn't discover this until I lived in CA. They would get bigger and bigger on each occasion instead of me gaining some immunity against them. The best step I have used is prevention for this.

            Good luck. -Mel

Thanks again .. sounds right to me. The bug clothes are primarily made with netting. So one can wear it over bathing suits or shorts etc. However your advice of tighter woven clothing sounds good too. We will be leaving for Ely in a couple of weeks and I'll have on hand softner sheets, and probably everything discussed here. The last time I got bit was in Savannah Georgia, Tybee Island. We had paddled our canoes out to little Tybee Island and were walking around...then the buggers were all over me...not him..just me. I was taking Benedryl for days, and using hydrocortozone cream for a couple of weeks. Real bummer. I am very alergic to many things, but if I can ward these little bitting buggers off I will be happy. Looking forward to going to Ely, just a little worried.
              Thanlks again...

The most natural way is pure Citronella oil. Very stinky but not a bad odor. Burt's Bee's sells their own version in a tin bottle. Bought some marked down in a local grocery store at the end of last season. I'll need it soon.

as for the burt's bees, I want to be a believer, but, it just wears off so fast! I do like the smell though. It rubs off in my sleep apparently, because most of the mosquito bites I would get when traveling in Mexico would be around the areas I wasn't properly covered up, which also would be areas most likely to wear off faster as well. I am planning on traveling w/a mosquito net this time around. 3rd times the charm, eh?

and yes, those guys looovvve me. over 200 bites from the last mexican adventure. Benedryl, advil & Cortizone were my friends! natural & organic products when I can, any emergency measure when it don't work out. But I still can't bring myself to used the nasty stuff deet or whatever it's called. I guess it's cuz I don't usually have good access to bathing a lot when camping, and hate the idea of that toxic stuff left on me for a week or so at a time!

This might not be the solution you are looking for but a group of us would go camping in south america and we'd drink aguaardiente, and for some odd reason the mosquitos would not come near us... sorry for those others that didn't drink agua ardiente.. They say there is something about the odor of that alcoholic beverage that just repels the mosquitoes...'

THey also say the smell of garlic keeps mosquitoes away.

Hi! I guess this is too late for your camping trip, but I like to use a mixture of ess oils: lemon grass, cironella, lavender & eucalyptus. I take a 1 once bottle, fill half way w/ distilled water, add witch hazel til it is about 3/4 of the way full then add about 5 drops each of the oils. Then I just shake real well before applying to the skin. This will also work well in a spritzer.

Also, garlic in the diet (hence the bloodstream) seems to be offensive to the buggers as well.

Did you try any of the other suggestions on your trip? How did things work?

    joy,
    Jannette
