smelly shoe remedy

topic posted Sun, March 2, 2008 - 10:23 AM by  Jenna
I have shoes that are getting on the smelly side since you don't wear them with socks. I can't wear those slip on stockings because of the way the shoe is. I was thinking of putting them in the wash but am afraid they fall apart. Any ideas on how to wash shoes so they last?

To take care of the odor, how about sprinkling in some baking soda?

I've done that but the baking soda piles up and creates a dirty film on my feet

Got it. Yeah I'd let it sit there overnight or a weekend, shake them out and hope for the best, but you wouldn't get all the powder out.

Are the insoles removable or replaceable? I often either add an extra insole, or change it out because I have really narrow feet and need to take up the extra space, but I've also noticed that changing the insoles can add some life to the shoes when they feel like they're starting to lose support. Would also help with the odor issues since you're sweating into the insoles for the most part.

I tried getting these gelatin kind of pads for the balls of my feet for cushion support. I'm hoping that might work. They look so dirty inside I might take a tooth brush and scrub them. Then let them dry

You could try a baby powder that is made of cornstarch rather than talc. Target's brand of baby powder is "scented" with lavender. I don't really know the quality etc... but using that as a base to make your own scented powder with the essential oils of lavender and tea tree as lavender is antimicrobial and tea tree is a powerful anti-fungal. Now, I've never actually done this, so you'd have to experiment with the amount of oils vs powder and how to mix, but that is the recipe that is in my essential oils book has. You could add some eucalyptus as that is a strong anti everything as well (fungal, microbial etc..) depending on your tastes.

And even though the powder contains cornstarch it seems seems to be softer, finer and silkier than normal cornstarch.

    If that doesn't work

You could try putting the oils directly onto the sole of the shoe. I've found that this works you just have to keep using it. But if they are REALLY dirty, you've got another problem altogether...

Wash them in the sink with saddle soap or simple green. Do it quickly, so they don't absorb too much water. Towel dry and leave them to air dry overnight.
Or sprinkle with baking soda, leave overnight, then shake out.

tee tree oil on a cotton ball and wiped over the inside of the shoe does wonders. tee tree is good for that stuff- kills bacteria and fungus and all that good stuff:) good luck!

      Hiya,

I have a spray bottle with a mix of 1 part white vinegar, 3 parts water and a couple drops of tea tree oil which I use as a general air freshener both in the bathroom and for use on fabric, shoes etc. Just spritz lightly inside your shoes before bed, and they should be dry and fresh by morning.

i'd spray the insides with a tea tree type thing, and then after letting that sit maybe use some of the crystal cat litter.. i know it isnt homemade but it works. i use that for my litter box and it doesnt stink at all, and i used it to soak up stinky smells around the house when i burnt some food really bad.
another idea is that powder they sell for shaking on carpets before you vaccuum. again, not home made but it would both soak up smells and deposit a nice scent.

in any case, to get rid of most of whatever powder you use.. try a vaccuum? i'd think it would work well.
