Is there a way to tighten a loose tooth?
so I've got 2 baby teeth that never had adult teeth to push them out. I bite down hard on 1 and now it's loose. It's in the front and I will need an expensive, and I hear painful, inplant.
Does anyone have any advise on how to keep it from getting looser, besides the obvious of not using it?
I'd like to delay the inevitable as long as possible.

Sun, June 4, 2006 - 3:19 PMwow...! thats totally weird and neat.
my orthodontist said to brush the gums to stimulate root growth for a couple minutes everyday. -

Re: loose tooth help
Sun, June 4, 2006 - 5:47 PMdelaying is very likely to make it worse. Find a dental school, they often work on people without a lot of money, and you are supervised by very experienced dentists. Sounds like an unusual case they would be interested in. -

Re: loose tooth help
Sun, June 4, 2006 - 6:28 PMI would get myself to a dentist. Its not going to get any better and maybe even worse.

Re: loose tooth help
Sun, June 4, 2006 - 6:41 PMDefinitely look for a dental school. If it's a baby tooth that's finally loosening, I sincerely doubt there's much you can do on your own. And if there's no adult tooth to take it's place.... -

Re: loose tooth help
Sun, June 4, 2006 - 7:30 PMmy son has this problem with his two front bottom teeth. They are still there and he's 24. We were told they'd fall out around 12 or 13. We found out that there were no 'big' teeth to grow in their place when he had an x-ray at 5 for a bad bicycle wreck. this isn't helping is it? :) -

Re: loose tooth help
Sun, June 4, 2006 - 8:50 PMLynn,
That's ok, I know I'm not a sideshow freak or anything. I've run into a few people that have or had the same problem. I hope your son gets to keep them for a long time. They've been telling me since I was a kid that they could last my whole life or fall out at anytime. I'm 38 now.
For the rest, I have consulted a dentist. The procedure is 1. pull tooth 2. implant 3. get temp tooth 4. 5 months later get perm tooth.
Even at UCSF or UOP it will cost a few thousand dollars. I'm not entirely sure that I want to get an inplant drilled into my jaw by a student, no matter who's supervising him/her.
Isn't there ANYTHING that will tighten up my gums? co-enzyme q10 is the only thing I can think of. -

Re: loose tooth help
Sun, June 4, 2006 - 8:53 PMI don't know if this will help, but I had a hygienist tell me to use a small tool - don't know what it's called. It's got a metal handle, like a toothbruch handle, and a small rubber - pointed thing at the end. You massage your gums with it. They last a long time, so I don't buy them more than once a year. I just look for it. It's made by GUM, I think. Keeps the gums really healthy, and I remember she told me that it helps tighten up the teeth and gums. Costs about 2 or 3 bucks. -

Re: loose tooth help
Sun, June 4, 2006 - 9:53 PMYou just don't want to risk infection. The mouth is a real breeding ground for it, and very close to the brain.
FWIW, in 1994, I was a teaching case for an abdominoplasty at Nassau County Medical Center in NY. Cost me about $3000 for the hospital, total, for surgery that had been estimated at over $30K by other doctors. The experienced doctors were there every step of the way, and I had no complications, great result. -

Re: loose tooth help
Sun, June 4, 2006 - 10:27 PMalso i'd say to get jason's healthy mouth mouth rinse... it has made a world of difference for me and friends with sore teeth and receding gums..
good stuff in there like coenzyme q10, tea tree, aloe... etc. -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: loose tooth help
Sun, June 4, 2006 - 10:58 PMhmm, I didn't think of mouth rinse. I've got some Tom's, but the Jason's sounds good.

Re: loose tooth help
Sun, June 4, 2006 - 11:09 PMI wanted to add, you may already have this information, but just in case...
I am not too deep into Western Medicine, but the mouth and teeth is not something I am personally comfortable with "do-it-yourself". You may want to try some things yourself anyway, but please, if it gets too bad, see a dentist. Worry about the money later,

clarification
Mon, June 5, 2006 - 8:47 PMok, maybe I wasn't clear.
I have seen a dentist I will get an implant, temp, and then permanent tooth, but I've lived with this tooth for going on 38 years now and it's not infected. Besides the fact that I owe over $6000 in taxes, my teeth are very sesitive and I only have 1 or 2 cavities so I'm not really comfortable with dental work.
Please believe, I wouldn't be putting this off if it was a helth risk. I used to have a friend that had a heart attack partially due to not going to a denist for most of his life. He survived the 1st heart attack, but never fully recovered his health. -

Re: clarification
Thu, May 7, 2009 - 11:35 AMWhen I had a sensitivity issue lately, my dentists had me go get Sensodyne toothpaste, and use a flouride rinse, to help re-mineralize the more exposed (dentin) areas of the tooth.
It took a little while (a week or two) but it definitely helps.
Also, don't forget to floss. And no smoking - including weed. Smoking is the #2 reason for tooth loss, after diabetes. Likewise, they finally did weed studies that showed pot smoke also negatively impacts gums.
Gums are VERY sensitive to low circulation - so anything that improves your circulation/ oxygen would help (exercise, vitamins...)
Do you have dental insurance? This could help cut down on the cost. Delta Dental is the most widely accepted and seems to cover the most procedures.

Re: loose tooth help
Mon, June 5, 2006 - 8:50 PMyeah regarding the mouth rinse thing...
i have a friend who is a rainbow gathering type of nomad with NO $$ and this took away an impending trip to a dentist for him
and seriously intervened on some receding gums for me
and it's not just any mouth rinse.. it's stuff that actually repairs gums and has an antiseptic in it...
hell, get it and rinse with it no matter what you choose

Re: loose tooth help
Mon, July 31, 2006 - 7:42 PMI too had two baby teeth. I had one replaced with an implant about 10 years ago. I still have the second at 54 years old. It too is now starting to get loose.
I understand that a new kind of implant now exists that can support a tooth immediately. For my first implant I had to wait for 6 months before a crown could be secured to the implant post. This was the worst part.

Re: loose tooth help
Mon, July 31, 2006 - 7:46 PMSimple answer to this one.. NO.
Another option is a fixed bridge or a partial denture.. Get a second opinion girl..
I used to be a dental assistant and used to see this problem alot..

Re: loose tooth help
Tue, August 1, 2006 - 10:33 AMThis process saved my teeth. I don't know if it's what you need, but maybe you have an infection under the tooth making it loose. I had an infection under the teeth and no rinse would work. If it is too deep you need to get in and clean it. Read the book that comes with it and follow the directions, it's really not hard once you get used to it. I used warm salt water in the syringe. They are like insulin syringes but without a point. This let's you painlessly get deep under the tooth into any loose pockets and clean them. After that they close up tight and you never have a problem again. Like mine did! I did it religiously for 3-4 months.
