DIY hair removal

topic posted Thu, April 6, 2006 - 7:45 PM by  Charity
so i decided to give "NAD's" a try.
You know, that australian product that had the infomercial a few years back... well it's in the drug stores now. Was curious how it worked compared to waxing... and it was actually pretty awesome- easier to deal with than wax- water soluble, doesn't have to be heated.
read the ingredients and they go something like this:
glucose, fructose, honey, molasses, lemon juice, color.
Anyone made their own sticky concoction for hair removal?
Success stories? recipes?

I like Nads too, but I only use wax for my legs. For those women out there that use wax for upper hair removal, I urge you please please DO NOT wax your upper lip area. I noticed that when I came to this country that alot of American women have wrinkles on there upper lip area & this is due to waxing. May I suggest threading or plucking. The slanted tweezers by tweezerman(not the pointed tip) is awesome for plucking those pain in the arse hairs in the upper lip area.

I know this post is quite old, and the poster is unsubscribed, now. But, I had to respond. Please don't assume that if you see one thing, it applies to everyone else.

All the women I've seen with wrinkles around their upper lips have them due SOLELY to their smoking habit. Trust me -- neither my mother, nor her sisters, nor their mother EVER had their upper lip waxed. And, their upper lips are/were the most wrinkled I had ever seen (well, until I left home, anyway!).

anyone wanna give a crack at answering my questions??
not to be rude, but the point of my post wasn't to find out who likes Nad's.

This site was recommended by the lady that gives me facials in Asheville:

I am planning on trying it this weekend, so I will give you an update!
        Good luck!

It took me one extra weekend - but I finally did it!

I should begin by saying that it is much easier to get the hair off of your legs by paying a Thai Lady to do it at your local B grade Spa! If you are still want to undergo this bizarre ritual you will need the following:
            A brave Puller
            An Evening
            Sheets
            Cornstarch
A NON stretchy type of cloth for pulling, T-shirt material did not work. We used an old linen sheet.

            For the sugaring concoction:
1 cup Milled sugar - the huge grains of sugar did not work
            Juice of One Lemon
            1/4 cup of honey
Two tbsp of water makes it have a wonderful spreadable consistancy
Get this mixture to a Soft Ball state of camelization. Let it cool as little as you can tolerate, I found that rewarming it makes it less and less effective each time.

It took three tries to get the mixture right. Large grains of sugar did not disolve until the sugar was too hard, but it was very delicious. I think this is the ultimate cough drop recipe, just add in the herb of your choice.
The second batch was without water - it was hard to spread and sometimes the spatula grabbed hair.
            The third was perfect!

Cornstarch on your skin is very important! This increases the amount of hair per swipe you get. Different sites stated different pulling techniques - pulling out and away, with the direction hair, against etc. We found that it is different for different areas. If you pull and less than 30% came off, just lay the same strip down and pull the opposite way.

I am also using Kalo Hair inhibitor cream right after clean-up and two days afterwards. It is expensive but worth it - I only want to go through this two or three times a year.

Good luck and have fun! Make lots of jokes and be brave!

"Different sites stated different pulling techniques - pulling out and away, with the direction hair, against etc."

I wax myself using all-purpose honey that you buy from beauty supply stores, - it is very easy and relatively painless. The only work is you have to heat the wax in the microwave, and can be tricky on the upper-lip (it requires a delicate and light hand).

The only real difficulty is getting the wax to cooperate on parts of the bikini line - upon applying the sheet to the freshly applied wax, the sheet refuses to come off; and this is not for lack of a sharp-quick pulling hand.

Is it my pulling technique? wax temperature? area on the bikini line or the wax I'm using??

Have you tried a smaller area? And usually on bikini lines you're probably going to have to pull from right to left and angled as opposed to straight up and down. Also pull more like you are opening a book rather than pulling weeds.

I haven't tried the microwave wax but have you tried gigi wax? Melt it completely and let it cool, it should be perfect. : ).

Thank you much for the suggestions - I will try the "open book" technique on the areas that are giving me trouble.

I highly recommend DIY bikini/brazilian waxing, if you already get waxes and are used to the feeling of getting it done. Surprisingly, it hurt *less* than when someone else does it for me.

As for products to accomplish this waxing, I second the Gigi wax; I use the Gigi all-purpose honey wax. Sure there's the heating of the wax (unlike Nad's), but I find it's the most effective - takes off all the hair.

One more thing, use powder to absorb all the moisture; I found out I wasn't using enough powder in the areas that needed it the most.

                  Thanks again for the suggestions!

Sugaring is the BOMB! I used to get it done at a Salon when I lived in New York.
It doesn't rip off the top layer of skin like waxing does, hence the added pain of wax. I did not notice any difference in hair re-growth between the two however. Italian hair grows back with a vengeance no matter what!
                • Ingrowns and Waxing.

Sometimes I wonder what I'd look like if I haven't been bikini/brazilian waxing for sooo long (close to 10 years now). It's supposed to get thinner and grow back less over time, right??

But I'm going to double the "grow back with a vengeance" part - maybe it's a
                  Latin thing too :-)

Anyone got some tips for preventing ingrown hairs along the bikini line? I already use a loofah and Tendskin.
                  • This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.

For my legs I soap them then brown sugar on top and scrub, scrub, scrub! Seems to work quite well if you keep up with it.

I made a recipe very close to the one posted here, but the use is different. Rather than reheating and using strips, the website says to use it as basically a putty. Pulling out small clupms, molding them into strips and using that alone to get the hair off. When I get it right it seems to really hold onto the hair.

I've done at home waxing, nads and sugaring at this point all over my body, but can never get more than 70% of the hair off. What am I doing wrong? I change my direction, pull speed and angle, but still can't get it. The powder doesn't seem to make any difference to me, but I've tried it too to no avail.

    What do I do?
