I want to make soaps from juices and I know that I have to use preservative to make the soap last longer. I am thinking to use vitamin E and citric acid for the preservative but I am not sure about the percentage of the preservative to use in the soap. I want to make a 4pound batch soap. Anybody could help me with this? Thx.

Re: Percentage of using natural preservative in natural soap
Fri, May 23, 2008 - 1:26 PMI make lotions and ointments. I use tincture of benzoin as a preservative (one drop per ounce of product). I make my own with powdered Sumatran benzoin and grain alcohol. It takes two weeks and shaking every day, but it's worth it. Just don't spill any on your counter top. I've not made soap, so I don't know how well it would work with it, but I wouldn't suppose it would be any different (anyone know?). -

Re: Percentage of using natural preservative in natural soap
Fri, May 23, 2008 - 2:43 PMi have yet to try vitamin E or citric acid for a natural preservative in my soaps. when i make soap, i use grapefruit seed extract.
for a 4lb. batch, i add 10 grams of GFSE.
i've read that carrot root oil is also another natural preservative.
if you are adding the juices to your soap for color and/or their nutrients, be aware that the process may change the color or neutralize the nutrients, depending on when you put them in the batch. hope everything turns out the way you want it to : )
