Anyone have ideas for a natural deodorant that works? I've tried the natural brand at the store but they never seem to be effective.....
Thanks!

lavilin is the absolute best (pricy)
i have tried every "alternative" (non-commerical, without aluminum) deodorant on the market
i am ultra sensitive
and i deem lavilin the best that can be bought in stores
(and it lasts for days!)
alternatively, a homemade solution is pure organic coconut oil
(yes, the kind you buy at the health food store)
i use spectrum brand
and always buy it in a glass jar
it's also a "wonder" salve for so many other things -

Fri, March 28, 2008 - 11:04 AMAnother vote for Lavilin. It's not so pricey if you buy it online, btw.

Re: Deodorant
Fri, March 28, 2008 - 10:52 AMjust remember - deodorant is NOT anti-perspirant. I had a co-worker a few years ago who was so excited to try some new crystal 'all natural' deodorant, and was SO upset when she still sweat buckets. She didn't believe me at first when I tried to explain the difference. -

Re: Deodorant
Fri, March 28, 2008 - 11:26 AMI've had fights w/ ppl about that too. De-Odor is different than ANITI-Perspire - Sorry you just brought up a dark place of time spent w/ a moron.

Re: Deodorant
Sun, March 30, 2008 - 2:34 PMFor de-odouring you can use a little baking soda patted on clean just washed (still a little damp) armpits. I don't use this as I found a great deodorant by a brand called green people, only drawback is its SO expensive.
For stopping the sweat process, you need the commercial 'normal' ones.

Re: Deodorant
Mon, March 31, 2008 - 5:23 AMMix baking soda with water and apply in armpit.
Reduce sodium intake to sweat less. -

beside lavilin, two more brands i found in my cabinet this morning that work for me (person highly sensitive to chemicals, allergic to everything, quick to break out, etc.):
--avalon organics
--alvera (i love their aloe & almonds)
both do the job for keeping back odor
the alvera more so than the avalon -

Re: Deodorant
Wed, April 2, 2008 - 9:01 AMIf I wear any, I have three - they were on sale so cheap, I stocked up. :P
One is a crystal thingy, the kind you wet and rub on (I apply when I'm damp out of the shower).
The one I use the most is Nature's Gate. I have lemon verbena and a lavendar one. That's my favourite.
I got a stick of Tom's for Christmas, haven't really tried it out, yet.
Hasn't gotten hot enough here to warrent deodorant usage. :)
I have a friend who swears by some sort of paste stuff. -

Re: Deodorant
Wed, April 2, 2008 - 3:31 PMtom's works for me, but i'm not a big deodorant girl- if i forget it, no one notices- my body just doesn't do the stink thing so much i guess...
i like all the pretty scents that toms has, not too floral and overpowering.

Re: Deodorant
Tue, April 8, 2008 - 7:49 PMi prefer the roll on salt crystals in water. thats basically all it is. over the crystal you wet and apply. though you get more bang for your buck with raw crystal. -

Re: Deodorant
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 11:59 AMI like the crystal. It seems to work for me. BUT, the actual crystal things starts to really stink like BO. Has anyone else noticed this? -
-
Re: Deodorant
Fri, May 16, 2008 - 2:11 AMno, but then i use the roll on instead of the crystal chunk. though it is still setting there for times like this week when i run out of my roll on salty goodness.

Re: Deodorant
Sun, May 18, 2008 - 8:13 AMAlison - I use the crystal too most of the time. I've found it can get slightly smelly sometimes but a simple rinse seems to fix it (and not putting the cover on so that it dries right away after use seems to prevent it). You may want to rinse if off after use too so there's no underarm bacteria left on it to get stinky. I've found it to be just as effective - if not more - than commercial "natural" deodorants.

Re: Deodorant
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 11:50 AMTry looking for something that contains sage. I've read that it kinda tones down the sweating thing. Plus, it smells nice and fresh and clean!

Re: Deodorant
Sun, April 13, 2008 - 5:59 PMI have tried many deodorants over the years and I found Tropical Traditions Lavender works wonders for smelly armpits. It is mostly coconut oil, jojoba, essential oils etc.

Re: Deodorant
Mon, April 14, 2008 - 3:12 PMI just bought a Kiss My Face brand all-natural, no parabens or aluminum deodorant with enzymes. I was skeptical because I have tried all kinds of natural deodorants and they NEVER work but surprisingly, this one does. Really. I actually decided to try it because it has a little note that says,"It really works!," and by golly, it does. I'm hooked. And praise the Goddess, no more aluminum. -

Re: Deodorant
Thu, April 17, 2008 - 11:26 AMI like the sage idea. what about mixing baking soda with powdered sage and a little coconut oil? a little mix up of some suggestions here. btw...it seems weird to me to put oil on the armpits. anyone care to share their experience before I go out and try to whip up this concoction? -

Re: Deodorant
Thu, April 17, 2008 - 5:12 PMyou know- a little off topic- but i'm becoming less of a fan of Kiss My Face- they advertise being all natural- but i have repeatedly bought their products claiming no parabens or SLS and then later read the ingredients and have found that they DID in fact contain SLS or parabens- under other sneaky names. seems scam-y to me. check that ingredient list for anything that could actually be aluminum- cause that stuffs nasty and you definitely don't want it in your deodorant that claims to have none... -
-
Re: Deodorant
Fri, April 18, 2008 - 12:22 PMYeah thats a good point - do you know the connatations of those ingredients so I can check? I've got a deodorant says no aluminium too but I guess it could have a lsneaky ittle bit (it doesn't really inhibit sweating though so there probably isn't :S) -

Re: Deodorant
Sun, April 20, 2008 - 1:20 PMI have used only Kiss My Face brand roll on crystal deodorant for years...its all that I ever found to work.

Re: Deodorant
Fri, May 16, 2008 - 9:03 AMI use a homemade deodorant, and I've found it to be better than any of the natural deodorants from a store. The ingredients are:
a mix of palm, soy, canola and olive oil (or whichever one you prefer)
cornstarch
baking soda
your preferred essential oils (I use peppermint and hyssop - makes it feel fresh and tingly!)
Just mix the oils with the powders until you get a consistency that you like.
Good luck! It can be hard to find something that really works for you. -

Re: Deodorant
Sat, May 17, 2008 - 11:55 AMWhat are the ratios for each and what kind of consistency can I expect?

Re: Deodorant
Sat, May 17, 2008 - 3:48 PMI have issues with what you can term "nervous" sweat - totally different than the sweat when it gets hot. In fact, it is worse when cold since the nervous tension when you get cold makes it happen. I haven't found anything effective for this, but I decided to continue my internal, herbal detoxing efforts. First, the colon, then the liver/kidneys, and finally the blood (and drinking quarts of distilled water) and lately, I have brought into my realm a woman with a lymph drainage machine (and I trade services with her) and she tells me I have clogging in glands around my chest and solar plexus area. This process can take a long time, and in the meantime, I end up showering more often and using natural deodorants with medicated powder like Ammen's or something (and if I HAVE to be in public very much for a long time, I break down on those days and use anti-perspirant, but I know this only worsens the problem, so I don't do this often at all).

Re: Deodorant
Wed, May 28, 2008 - 8:10 AMI learned on this tribe last summer about Apple Cider Vinegar as a deodorant. I have used it since. I still have my natural scent, but not the odor of bacteria.
To use, get an organic apple cider vinegar. Fresh out of the shower, drench a cotton ball or round cotton pad (I now use the pads but started with the balls).
Rub it in your arm pits. It takes a few minutes to dry. This would be a good time to brush your teeth/hair or do something else. Don't get dressed before it dries or you will have vinegar clothes.
Get dressed and be on your merry way. Put on an essential oil or your favorite fragrance if you desire. I rarely do that and only for my pleasure (especially since the world is full of scent sensitive people).
You can apply this at anytime, shower/bath or not. It doesn't last as long as an antiperspirant will to control scent, so some people will take a squirt or spray bottle with them to work and use it mid day or towards the end. I have never needed this, but I do know that when I get really nervous, my scent changes.
Some people are sensitive after showering and shaving the pits, in that the vinegar will sting. I rarely have this issue but it does happen occasionally. The sting lasts a couple of seconds only.
Your natural scent will be present, which I love and didn't realize I even had. I was either unscented from the antiperspirant or suffering from rancid smelling body odor from the bacteria. The vinegar has altered all of that. I can eat it, I can use it on my body, it really is good for me. -
