Started with one spot size of a quarter on my left shoulder pec. Stayed that way for a few years. The last 3 years that spot has disappeared but now I have a multitude of spots, the size of an eraser head, in clusters . They are mostly on left shoulder blade down to middle of back.
Now a few are popping up on my stomach.
Was told it was a fungus no known cure or reason for it. They are itchy at times.
Was given the one pill anti - fungus treatment to no avail. They tanned over in the summer but once I faded they came back.
I've read several different home remedies: apple cidar vinegar, Over-the-counter (OTC) remedies include clotrimazole and miconazole. These should be applied twice a day for 10-14 days but come in small tubes and are hard to apply to large areas. Another OTC option is selenium sulfide shampoo 1% (Selsun Blue) or 1% ketoconazole shampoo. Some doctors recommend applying these for 15 minutes twice a week for two to four weeks.
Need something that will work!

Re: Tinea Versicolor
Mon, February 16, 2009 - 7:10 PMHey I've had Tinea Versicolor- That thing is a bitch to get rid of. I've never used any homemade remedies for it though- although I would LOVE to hear if anyone has found an herbal remedy that actually works. For me it gets worse in the summer. I'm black so in the sun it presents itself as light patches. But if you have light skin I believe it will "appear" to blend it with your skin in the sun. But the sun only aggravates the condition so be sure to wear SPF. I'm going to find the medication that was prescribed to me and give you the name of it. That REALLY worked for me. -

Mon, February 16, 2009 - 7:33 PMExtina Foam is what the dermatologist prescribed. It worked really well. Its a foam and I believe that I had to put on twice daily for like 2 or 3 weeks. I had it all over my chest it was pretty weird.

Re: Tinea Versicolor
Thu, February 19, 2009 - 9:35 PMI have had a painful and itchy clusters for 4 years now that has never gone away. Several doctors diagnosed and treated it as Shingles. I have used several herbal as well as medical pills and salves but it never went away. I saw a new doctor last week and he said he thought it was a fungus. So I got some over-the-counter fungus liquid and it did look like it was drying up, but then it started red round as well as scratch like looking bumps in more places. Now I notice a couple of red bumps and a red looking scratch under one breast. Anyone know if this sounds like Tinea..... I have had small tiny groups on the back as well. Does this sound like it?
I read if you have shingles and use a fungal creme etc, it spreads the shingles. Help anyone! -

Re: Tinea Versicolor
Fri, February 20, 2009 - 7:36 AMIf it's shingles, suggest you start taking L-Lysine tablets and perhaps get some lysine ointment to treat bumps.
"Lysine is listed(1) as an essential element in nutritional treatment of Cardiovascular Disease, Cold Sores, Lead Poisoning and Shingles. Very Important for Canker Sores, Growth Problems, Herpesvirus Infection, Lupus and Osteoporosis. Important for Common Cold, Hysterectomy Recovery, Influenza and helpful for Bronchitis, Menopausal Problems, Obesity, Stress and Weakened Immune System"

Re: Tinea Versicolor
Fri, February 20, 2009 - 5:10 PMNo that can't be Tinea. Painful and itchy clusters are not symptoms associated with it. Tinea mainly appears in some sort of discoloration, some itching may be involved

Re: Tinea Versicolor
Fri, February 20, 2009 - 6:04 PMIs it another kind of ring worm? There is more than one kind. -

Re: Tinea Versicolor
Thu, May 7, 2009 - 11:32 PMRingworm is fungal. It just looks like a ring since it starts as a dot & spreads out in a circle.
Treat with anti-fungals - lots of these treatments at the drugstore...

Re: Tinea Versicolor
Thu, May 7, 2009 - 11:30 PMred bumps is not tinea. Tinea versicolor is tan and brown spots, sometomes white spots - itchy & dry / flaky. It's fungal.
Shingles is viral. Try taking anything anti-viral.
For ex: try taking elderberry (proven anti-viral) and put a licorice extract & peppermint salve on the skin. (Anti-viral & penetrating...)

Re: Tinea Versicolor
Fri, March 20, 2009 - 9:48 PMLived in troical florida for many years. This is a fungus that responds very well to selsen blue shampoo applied like a lotion. works. -

Re: Tinea Versicolor
Sat, March 21, 2009 - 1:22 PMYes, I heard that many people in Hawaii do this too - the Selsun Blue shampoo has much the same thing as the expensive stuff that the dermatologist prescribes. Good luck - it's always great when one can find a cheap remedy that actually works. I have a few white spots myself, but I think they are from sun damage incurred when I was younger. Since I'm in my early 60's, there really weren't any sunblocks around when I was a lot younger. Even now, I have trouble with SPF products as most bother my skin in one way or another. -

Re: Tinea Versicolor
Thu, May 7, 2009 - 8:01 PMtinea loves sun and heat.
It does itch, sometimes, for some reason.
I use Listerine oral rinse with cotton ballls to clean the area, until the cotton balls stop picking it up, then apply the Selsen Blue Shampoo, in my case, a little onthe face and nose, the arms, mostly the forearms, and even somewhat on my upper chest.
I use it at bedtime as it does kinda make one turn a little blue! and has its own aroma, not awful, but nothing like a nice essential oil! LOL
Lots of mine is gone now! yay! Thanks a whole lot to a friend who is an RN, who noticed my intense scratching, and no help at all from a local dermatologist! At all!
In fact a part on my upper am that has always been referred to as a birth mark is now gone as well. Thats what really picqued my curiousity!
