Pregnancy Skin Care?

topic posted Sun, May 4, 2008 - 9:00 AM by  offlineJessica
So 10 weeks into my pregnancy I'm trying to find new, and more natural, skin care products... My skin alternates between the very oily (t-zone) and very dry (the rest of my face/body).

Any suggestions?

i am 28 weeks today (yay!) and found that my normally somewhat combo but prone to breakout skin has become much drier, which i never would have expected. but using any sort of a creme makes it way to oily, go figure. so my routine, which is actually working really well, is dr. bronners lavender, it's milder than the tea tree that i used to use (plus tea tree isn't recommended in preg.) but still keeps all the ickies away, then rose water for it's super gentle moisturizing/ astringent action, then an oil-free serum. right now i'm using one by derma-e, but have used avalon organics in the past with good results too. then i use a little alba sunscreen in the morning. i guess there's nothing homemade in it, but i am not one who can get away with straight oils, unfortunately. i only use dr bronners on my body.

i recommend not even thinking about any of the so called "natural" products at the grocery/drugstore etc. i spent years trying one thing after another when i was younger, and finally realized that the only way to go was the health food store/co-op. stuff is a bit more expensive initially but when you actually use something all up instead of having a zillion half-full bottles of chemical crap cluttering the closet, you understand!

good luck! pregnancy skin care can be a huge challenge for such a little thing... it does get better after the first trimester!

I'm with Maria... I'm in my 24th week and my skin has changed in each trimester thus far... in my first trimester my forehead was pretty oily while everything else was dry.... It's pretty evenly dry at this point, but I still have my oily days... now everything is starting to itch... =p arg!

I would love to find some more home made remedies! So far the only thing I can use in my oily areas is a hemp lotion... right now I have a bottle of Nature's Gate and I love it...! Doesn't leave a residue or feel oily a few hours after washing my face...

All over the rest o' me tho (esp the tum!!) I like to use Shea Butter and add essential oils to it... there is nothing as hydrating and such as Shea Butter... I was able to get a small tub (I think 11oz) at my local health food store for $10 and then you can just use a double broiler at home to melt it down and add in your oils...

**I will add to mix you essentials first and not wait till yer adding to the butter to experiment... Arnica oil is also great to add to this as it's a great healer for skin and muscles when "under strain" or have been injured... "under strain" just about sums up my not so little belly swell! :D Nature's Pharmacy is the brand I use for the Arnica, I use it in all my massage lotions! It's good for the joints too! (my hips need some as I write...! :D)

Some good blends are Tangerine, Ylang Ylang and Rosemary... throw in some Cedarwood for a grounding effect... Geranium is always nice too... Rosewood will help smooth a real earthy mix of oils as well...
      Good luck!

something i have learnt from pregnancy, is that what's important to do not to get stretch marks, is use a wet sea sponge (you can add a bit of rose oil or lavender oil) morning and night every day and scrub gently in circular motions all the parts of your body that will be prone to stretch marks. This can be around the breasts, your whole belly area, even your upper legs and ass... This is very important to help the skin be elastic and stretch and slowly go back into place after your pregnancy.

You may want to add in coco butter with your shea butter and a little vitamin e oil. That's what I used (not the shea of course since it wasn't available at the time), and I don't have any stretch marks after three children (the last one being a over nine pounds). :)

For the most part, just keep yourself clean and hydrated. I use a salt/coconut oil scrub on my skin every now and then (ok, it's really the LUSH Ocean Salt scrub rather than something homemade, but I love it) to exfoliate and a light lotion on my drier areas, but that's about it.

Some people are more prone to getting stretch marks than others. It's a matter of genetics. Rubbing cocoa butter or other oils on the belly will make it feel good and might reduce the marks a little, but don't feel like a failure if you get them.

    Drink a lot of water!
