I just used a bunch of already used for coffee grounds which I had saved up for a few days, mixed it with a bit of olive oil.. and then got wild and added some henna and soem hot water as it is supposed to activate henna.. then started mixing it in to my hair.

I di have a mess.. it is clumpy and falls onto the floor, pants.. etc..

however, after leaving this in for about 30 minutes, I now have a nice warmer color to my hair and some grey is coveredcompletely.

            2 things:

            1.) It makes a mess...

2.) instructions for henna say to not use any metal incontact with anything.

Most of the grey is covered, some needed more time or contact.. that goes back to mess. I didn't make a good clumpy goop of it. I used coffee grounds which were not very fine, so they were hard to get to stay in contact with hair.
            The result however, is good.
I had to do a lot of rinsing to get it all out.

              definitely!

years ago i used to make a henna rinse to put through my hair, amd would pour it through over and over until most of it had spilled out! still messy but more manageable. But since I'm looking more to keep just the roots I might switch to a paste. Every time I use henna I get a lot of compliments on my hair.

I have found that when I need to mix something to a paste, like a clay mask, I have a drink mixer that is perfect for that

I use the small glass put my stuff in, mix it up, and I have a perfect paste that really helps cut down on the mess.

If you are mixing powered henna with water, you have to be careful not to use too much. I use a scant cup with a 2-oz package.
Color develops over time, I leave it on for 3 hours in a shower cap, and get vibrant color with total gray coverage. Never tried coffee.
  • Coffee is acidic, and works great with henna....but you definitely will get red color.
I don't know about coffee used alone, but I do believe the caffeine will absorb through your scalp- probably best done early in the day, or at least when you don't need to sleep <g>

If you do want to try with henna, have a look at hennaforhair.com for mixes with coffee 9and tea, etc)

There was a thread about this on homemade beauty remedies about a year ago. I believe people were rinsing their hair with a pot of coffee, but some people got caffeine jitters from it (there are a lot of arteries really close to the skin in yours scalp, and it's not impossible that they could soak up some of the caffeine right into your blood stream). Some people switched to decaf as I recall!

I tried coffee twice when coloring my hair with henna, and it gave me a massive headache, I'm guessing from absorbing into my scalp. I'm pretty sensitive to caffeine though (2 cups of coffee, and I'm shaky) so if you're not sensitive to caffeine you may have a better experience than I did.
