I have a friend that has dreads. I know nothing about dreads, but I'd like to help him take care of them. Any tips? Specifically, I'm looking for scalp maintenance and how to dread close to the scalp. Help?

Tue, April 4, 2006 - 2:10 PMThanks. I'll check out the tribes.
The dreads aren't really dirty, they just need some upkeep. -

Re: Dread maintenance

Re: Dread maintenance
Tue, April 4, 2006 - 7:05 PMno, no, he was Klean man! not dirty at all, and his dreads didn't look it either.
not until he cut them open. it was, uh, not so good.
i have no idea how that could be avoided.
the secret to nice dreads is oiling the scalp but it doesn't
work for non-black hair, it just undoes the knots 'cause the
hair isn't nappy enough to knot up.
check out dreadyboy, it's a line of dread specific products
for all kinds of hair including a good shampoo.

Re: Dread maintenance
Mon, April 3, 2006 - 9:31 PMwhite guy?
my friends little bro cut his off a while ago
he's a pretty clean guy but they were full of
tiny, wiggly, little white worms.
not kidding.
non-black hair collects so much gunk and stuff
my suggestion for dreads in that case is to
Cut Them Off.
it's a totally personal thing, i know, but i'll just never
recover from that story. ugh.
black hair is not suseptible to lice and other parasites. it's just not the same. -

Re: Dread maintenance
Wed, April 5, 2006 - 12:22 PMI appreciate all the suggestion, but I'm surprised that there aren't any homemade ideas. Oh well... off to the store we go. ;) -
-
Re: Dread maintenance
Wed, April 5, 2006 - 12:38 PMthe only homemade one I have is salt water. Spray hair with salt water and let it dry before you do the dreads. Its helps. Or, if you are lucky enough to be close, take a dunk in the ocean. Salt water helps em tighten up too.

Re: Dread maintenance
Wed, April 5, 2006 - 6:07 PM...."Head lice have problems latching on to curly and kinky hair. In addition, African American hair is more elliptical than white children's hair and head lice find it difficult to hold onto elliptical hair. In Africa, where the percentage of children with head lice is higher, lice have adapted their claws to better grasp elliptical hair.
Another explanation is that African Americans are more likely to use Vaseline, pomades, and hair gels. These products make the hair less hospitable to head lice.".....
however, a mixed race dark skinned person is more likely to have lice-hospitable hair than a non-mixed race dark skinned person.
and the swimming in the ocean thing is prolly a great idea.

Re: Dread maintenance
Wed, April 12, 2006 - 12:39 AMi want to know what the worms are!
i got totally freaked out when i saw this teeny red worm on my cat. it turned out that its a stage of a flea's life.

Re: Dread maintenance
Thu, April 13, 2006 - 12:52 PMWait, FIRST your friend got high on acid and THEN cut off her dreads and saw all these worms coming out of them? Did anyone ELSE see the worms?
Not that I haven't heard these dread horror stories, but I had them for at least a year and they were nice and clean when I took 'em out. Mine were thin ones, though. I can imagine there's a lot of crap in the big fat ones.

Re: Dread maintenance
Mon, April 10, 2006 - 11:00 AMIt's actually true, just not in the way the poster described it. Different types of head lice have different types of claws that are better adapted for one hair type (flat vs. round) over the other. -

Re: Dread maintenance
Wed, April 12, 2006 - 12:41 AMwell maybe thats why i never got lice when it was everywhere in school.

Re: Dread maintenance
Mon, April 27, 2009 - 9:37 AMThere are several shampoos available for washing dreads without damaging them.
Look for Organic Root Stimulator Herbal Cleanse Dry Shampoo, like this: www.organicrootstimulator.com/pro....htm You can find it at most Beauty Supply shops fairly inexpensively. It is one of my personal favorites to use as it leaves my scalp fresh & tingly every time.
Other maintenance tools I use:
a strong metal comb, crochet hook (for stray hairs), knotty boy dread wax (for starter dreads only), mini rubber bands (to help keep locks from sticking together).
I have been successfully maintaining my own natural dreadlocks for almost 5 years now. I do wash my hair with water & a mild natural soap about every 1-2 weeks and use the Dry Herbal Shampoo more regularly, maybe not everyday but enough to keep my hair fresh & clean.
Check this site out too: www.knottyboy.com/salon/
I've personally only tried the dread wax, but I've heard good things about their other products as well.
It's easier than it seems to maintain dreadlocks :)

Re: Dread maintenance
Mon, April 27, 2009 - 9:48 AMPS// I do realize the shampoo is not a homemade remedy, but it does contain natural ingredients that one could find if they wanted to make their own version of hair cleanse. You could also try a mixture of water, sea salt, lemon juice, witch hazel, tea tree oil, etc (preferably in a spray bottle). I want to make some of this soon to see how well it actually works...maybe I'll add some herbs into the mix too :)
