So that time of year is here.... ALLERGIES!!!! I have no idea what I'm allergic to, but since I got pregnant with my son it has been allergies at every season change. I just started using a squirt bottle to flush my sinuses with baking soda/water mix (I don't have anything else to rinse with right now) and it seems to help for a little while, but it comes back later. I've heard dried nettle in capsules is really good. Anyone try this?

Wed, February 20, 2008 - 5:45 PMLocal honey is good for building your ammune to the allergens you are fighting with in your neck of the woods. It helps control your reactions too.
EAT LOCAL HONEY! -

Re: Allergies allergies allergies....
Tue, April 8, 2008 - 7:53 PMya just asked my doc about this, and he freaked. swears that eating honey can give you anifilactic (no clue how to spell that sorry) shock, shrugs. says that if the honey is local and contains pollen, duh thats why you would take it, and you are allergic to those pollens you can have a nasty reaction. and so the very reason you would take it could in fact kill you. he might be full of crap cause he is an allergist and wants you to come get his fancy shots, not sure though.

Thu, February 21, 2008 - 6:37 PMYou might want to check out MSM: www.nutriteam.com/msm-allergies.htm
I started taking it for entirely separate reasons (joint and skin health) but supposedly it really helps the body react to allergens better. It doesn't sound natural, no, but it's a kind of sulfur (if you're allergic to sulfur--never mind!). -

Re: Allergies allergies allergies....
Fri, February 22, 2008 - 11:52 AMif at all possible, please get a comprehensive allergy test. Trial and error is a very slow and not very efficient way to diagnose and treat allergies. And they can be caused by completely unrelated health problems.

Re: Allergies allergies allergies....
Fri, February 22, 2008 - 7:54 PMWell if you are pregnant be careful of what you use.
But other than that I can say that when I had my kids some things changed in my body.
I have a bad reaction to some foods I eat. So I stay away from those.
And never really had allergies until I moved to Texas.
So if there have been changes of location of where you live this could also be the cause. -

Re: Allergies allergies allergies....
Wed, February 27, 2008 - 11:15 AMI have tried all of the above. Freeze dried nettle capsules are good, they stop the histamine reaction. I used to take them along with Quercetin and vitamin C. Lately I'm trying a homeopathic by Boiron called Sabadil. It works really well. I take MSM regularly and it's great stuff. It cuts the inflammation in the body which is why it helps with allergens. When I lived in New Mexico, there was this amazing homeopathic tincture called Allergina. I can't seem to find it anywhere now that I'm not in NM anymore, but it was absolutely amazing. It is made to fight all the allergens in a particular zone of the country. I always assumed that they made one for every different zone of the country, but I'm not so sure anymore. I just tried to look it up on the web, and no luck. I can't take bee pollen, I seem to have an allergic reaction to it, but there's never any harm in taking a spoonful of LOCAL honey every day.
Good Luck!

Re: Allergies allergies allergies....
Wed, March 12, 2008 - 12:40 PMlike Susan, I have had sucess with stinging nettle and Quercetin as well as Bromelain. There is an allergy fromula that had these 2 with some other ingrediants that seemed to work well for me. can't remember the name right now, I'll try to get back to you on that. I have no idea of the compatability with pregnancy.

Re: Allergies allergies allergies....
Wed, February 27, 2008 - 12:15 PMI'm one of those scary-allergic people (even my allergist says so) so I tend to be more conservative in dealing with my allergies. As I understand it, the point of eating local honey is to build up your tolerance to the allergens. If you're crazy-allergic you have to become a bubble person and not expose yourself to any of that stuff. My doc told me not to eat honey.
I don't think typical seasonal allergies warrant my kind of vigilance, but things like anaphylaxis are dangerous, so I just wanted to toss out the note of caution. I'm not suggesting that alternative remedies shouldn't be tried, but just be careful and monitor yourself. It's not exactly like taking a new multivitamin. But I'm sure you already know that. :-p -

Thu, February 28, 2008 - 10:08 AMYou might consider a round of a super high quality probiotic, like the one from Garden of Life...Life and Death begin in the gut...

Re: Allergies allergies allergies....
Fri, February 29, 2008 - 7:38 AMI agree with the local honey suggestion, but want to add that because you are introducing your particular allergens directly into your body, you may have a few days in which you actually feel like it is getting worse (this is assuming, of course, that this is what is causing you to react in the first place). After everything "sorts itself out", you will hopefully get relief.
Bee pollen is basically a super strong version of the honey. I would not recommend taking more than one granule to start out. It was too strong for me, but the honey works great. -

Re: Allergies allergies allergies....
Mon, March 3, 2008 - 4:10 PMI take honey... and it helps a bit. I can't take pollen. I react to it. I have taken homeopathic stuff but didn't notice a big difference. For me the trick with allergies has been to reduce or minimize alcohol, coffee, & chocolate comsumption. I also notice sometimes soya and corn can make my seasonal allergies worse for some reason. And the biggest one for me... STRESS.. If I reduce stress my allergies are less intense.

Re: Allergies allergies allergies....
Sat, March 8, 2008 - 11:45 AMEven while you are pregnant you might want to do a liver cleanse, which seems to be a source of many allergy issues. The nettle is a great suggestion, and I would also recommend astragalus, a Chinese herb. For your liver, use things like Oregon Grape Root, Barberry Bark, etcetera, or if you wish to go more gentle (which I do) and do it for longer, try Burdock and Yellow Dock roots, Turmeric, Milk Thistle Seeds (or Dandelion Root), and Cardamon (which helps). Mix a ground powder with raw honey and take about 1/2 teaspoon twice a day. Also, make sure your bowels move well (or you can add some Cascara Sagrada bark to your mix too). I would do a liver cleanse every Spring if you are prone to this. Good luck! -

Re: Allergies allergies allergies....
Mon, March 10, 2008 - 10:49 AMThere are several herbs which are contraindicated during pregnancy, check VERY carefully before using anything. Perhaps an experienced midwife might be helpful. -

Re: Allergies allergies allergies....
Thu, March 20, 2008 - 11:28 AMbee pollen is good. builds immunity. u just need to test u are not allergic to it bi ingesting a few pellets first and see if you react. it's a good energy tonic and probably best to ask at ur local health food store if it is ok to take during pregnancy. i find echinecea good but im not pregnant so again need to check i guess -

Re: Allergies allergies allergies....
Fri, March 21, 2008 - 3:40 PMStinging nettles fresh spring ariel parts(leaves and stems). Steep in hot water. Add a spoonful of honey if you need some sweetness.
I have a friend with really bad allergies that I brought cuttings of nettles and she drinks nettles tea 3 times a day and has been able to go off of her allergy meds and feels super good. -
-
Re: Allergies allergies allergies....
Sun, March 23, 2008 - 11:21 AMI use a tea occasionally to relieve constipation. It matters greatly how long you allow it to steep, too little will will have no effect, and too long will result in great intestinal distress.
So, when y'all post remedies like this, would you kindly include precise quantities and directions? -

Re: Allergies allergies allergies....
Sun, March 23, 2008 - 4:11 PMnettle's are okay for pregnancy they are actually really good for you in pregnancy for a number of reasons
one being the iron and stuff that's in there
I had success with nettle tinctures and teas for a while
they stopped working after a couple years and then quercetin (someone else spelled it right above somewhere)
worked for a while
and now I hardly get them, but I've been eating the local raw honey for a while so that helps and
I don't live in the moldy house or drive the moldy car that were wearing me down either
your general health has a big effect on how much problems the allergies cause you so make sure to eat your vegetables and drink lots of water, but nettles are definitely a good idea in any of the forms mentioned in this thread
there are other things containing ephedrine (which was always my favorite) but don't do those when you're pregnant

Re: Allergies allergies allergies....
Tue, April 8, 2008 - 7:57 PMby the way NETTLE AND PREGNANCY DO NOT MIX!!!!!!!! it can cause cramping of the uterus and abort your fetus. just saying. it is most dangerous in first trimester. but please research your herbs before using them. nettle is a wonder herb. tones bladder and uterus and prostate hell has even been shown to cure prostate cancer. helps with allergies and all sorts of stuff. but it should be used before and after pregnancy to tone the female parts and avoided during.

Re: Allergies allergies allergies....
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 6:48 AMAn allergy is the body's way of telling us that it cannot handle something in the environment around you... it can be many things but most people put it down to pollin or something in nature.
The problem is that as the Earth is becoming more and more polluted people are becoming less and less tolerant to chemicals... in season it is most likely the crop spraying chemicals on the pollin that are irritating you.
Many many study's say that these chemicals are not toxic but they do not take into account the combined effect of all the chemicals we are exposed to every minute of every day.
This toxic cocktail is making us more and more irritable (allergies, allergies)... so I would suggest that you look closer to home and cut out all the products that have toxins in them (household cleaning products are the worst... start readling labels and then google the names if you don't understand.... its mind boggling what we don't know)... also try to eat only locally grown organic produce.
The reason I think that you are suddenly now more subceptable to allergies since your pregnancy... is because you body is telling you what your child can and can't be exposed too (children these days are HIGHLY sensitive to toxins)... this is a gift... you should listen to it.

Re: Allergies allergies allergies....
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 8:04 AMMy friend told me about something called a neti pot [www.netipot.co.uk/] which you can buy to flush out the sinuses, but I used a pipette. It seemed to soothe me a bit and take away the lightheadedness and tight feeling in my head. I forgot to, but I was going to add in ginger to the salt water...dunno why it just seemed the right thing to do...I'm going to try it out tonight and see if it makes the symptoms any better. -

Re: Allergies allergies allergies....
Fri, May 16, 2008 - 2:10 AMif the tilting of the head with the neti pot is to uncomfortable there are bottles you can buy that remind me of douches. well i guess they are nasal douches. they are called ayr and can be found in any pharmacy.
