I wanted to share a cold sore remedy, that is so simple.
All you need is ice. At the first sign of that dreaded tingle grab some ice, wrap in a plastic bag and knot it, hold on area for 1 hour, I like to wrap a cloth around the end to stop my fingers getting to cold. Sometimes this is enough to stop the cold sore in it's tracks and you won't even blister. Usually untreated I can expect a cold sore to stick around a month before it is completely gone. My recent outbreak was gone in a week after icing.

St John's wort is anti viral( I contracted herpes simplex 2 a few years ago) and although free from attacks now, every now and again get a teeny tingling. I recently discovered , after a blister on my lip appeared, that an application of 'Cymex' and a couple of tablets, it had disapeared by the 3rd day!

I'm surprised by that because St. John's wort makes people more susceptible to the sun. Since UV exposure is a *big* trigger for herpes outbreaks, I wonder if it isn't better for genital than lip sores (is your lip sore herpes 2? and it keeps coming back? interesting.). I've seen it suggested before, I'm just leery because sun is the biggest problem for me.

Also, it's good to remember that cold sore duration can differ from episode to episode no matter what you do. Thus, it's difficult to tell if something *really* works when using oneself as a guinea pig. I have had 0 luck with the ice cube remedy; though I can see why it *should* work, I also think that the triggers for an outbreak can go deeper than one can get with an ice cube.

Best cold sore prevention I've found is PREVENTION: sunscreen, stress-reduction and eating lysine-rich foods all the time (arginine:lysine ratios can affect in vitro viral replication. It's thought that they alter it in your body, too). The first two are proven by solid research, the last is suggested. I broke down and got a huge prescription for acyclovir when I started getting outbreaks in new and very painful spots on my lips. I'm exceedingly susceptible--any stress and sun and BAM. I even get outbreaks on my eyes (sunglasses).

It's stress for me.I get reoccurring mouth ulcers which the dr says are not related to herpes, but I'm not so sure, since they came about around the same time I contracted the virus.I rarely get coldsores(or any symptoms since I ditched the partner who shared the virus) I have a new partner who is very understanding, and we are sensible. I have never had any other symptoms. My father died of Betchet's syndrome when he was 30, and my sister has similar symptoms , although has been tested for herpes 2 and was negative. It was suggested by a specialist that she may have a mild form of betchet's?
Lysene has no effect on me, or if it does I hardly notice since attacks are rare Yes the lip thing is in the same spot , and is herpes 2 :(

I've been told those mouth ulcers are caused by stress, but can be all sorts of things: viruses (like colds), bacteria, stress, autoimmune illness, all sorts of things. My kids get them *bad*, and for at least one of them, they turned out to be related to gluten allergy.

That's interesting, I had thought of that and did go without bread for a while, though not all wheat....and felt better all round! Not sure if it helped the ulcers as they come in batches and I never have the time to work out a pattern (although I am under a lot of stress) worth a try :)

i make and sell (professionally) silver and gold colloidal solutions. When i produce silver colloid, there is residual silver oxide that falls to the bottom of the glass container in the process of rendering. usually that is throw away, but i carefully pour off the water, and dry the paste until dry. then i grind it a bit to bring it to the finest of powder. i just keep it in a little bottle, and i put it on full strength on the affected area. and it is remarkably effective, especially if used, like previously mentioned, with ice. so if you know a home hobbyist that produces silver colloidal, ask them for the leftovers. :)
